VELOCITY ANALYTICAL COLUMN SYSTEM: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What are the wetted materials used in the Velocity system?

A. All internal components used in Velocity hardware are made with stainless steel or PEEK. Pre-column filter inserts also contain FEP in addition to these two materials.

Q. Are Velocity analytical cartridge columns tested for quality?

A. Every Velocity cartridge column is individually tested after packing, and a serialized test chromatogram is provided. Our cartridge columns must meet stringent specifications for quality and efficiency of packing before they can bear the name Velocity.

Q. What is the pressure limit for Velocity/OPTI-LYNX quick-connect HPLC hardware?

A. Velocity hardware with 2.1 and 3.0 mm bed diameters are rated for operation at 6,000 psi. 4.6 mm bed diameter hardware is rated for operation at 4,000 psi.

Q. If Velocity hardware is rated to 6,000 psi and still opens up in a quarter-twist, it must be really hard to open, right?

A. Not at all! Hands of all sizes and strengths can easily open velocity with just one gentle quarter-turn. And although we have not researched this, we believe opposing thumbs may even be optional.

Q. Cartridge columns always seem to have a lot of extra-column volume - is the Velocity system subject to these same shortcomings?

A. No - Velocity was designed specifically for use in situations with little allowance for extra-column volume. Liquid is conducted between components between tight pathways, with minimal dispersion. When using Velocity columns without pre-column devices, there is only 0.66µL of volume between the connecting tubing and the column frit.

Q. If I switch to Velocity, am I locked into using your hardware and columns for the rest of time eternal?

A. No. Because Velocity hardware connects to your system with standard polymeric compression fittings, you can easily switch back to a conventional column at any time. While Velocity is connected, of course, you don't even have to touch those compression fittings!
